It’s been said that the approach to Christmas is as good as the day itself but people often forget about the potential of the day’s aftermath. An event’s only as good as its after party, right? Once the big day is over and the guests are gone, get yourself to one of these luxury hotspots for a well-deserved post-Christmas break. Whether you’re a skiing in Courchevel type or a Christmas market enthusiast, the kingdom of cool destinations is just awaiting for you and it’s never been so stylish.

1. Waldorf Astoria Berlin, Berlin, Germany

Start your year at this brand new offering from the Hilton group. Offering a contemporary twist on Art Deco styling, the hotel is housed in Berlin’s impressive Zoofenster skyscraper and is the perfect foil to the more traditional Christmas goings on of the city. Book a spot at the stunning Guerlain Spa (closed from January 6 to January 7 2014) for post-festivities relaxation or enjoy the snow-capped sights of the city from the 360-degree-view presidential suite which occupies the entire 31st floor.

2. Gstaad Palace, Gstaad, Switzerland

Breathtaking views of the village of Gstaad and the Bernese Alps aren’t the only USP of this iconic hotel (although they do help). Designed with nothing but your comfort in mind, the interior is alpine luxury to the nth degree. Celebrating its 100th anniversary this month, the institution will be entering 2014 in true Gatsby style with a roaring 20s New Year’s Eve party which isn’t to be missed.

3. Hotel Le K2, Courchevel, France

We’ve kind of fallen in love with this year’s addition to France’s most prestigious ski resort. Classifying itself as a “luxury hotel village” the Le K2 is a vanguard in the next generation of Courchevel residences. Its grand Himalyan-inspired woodwork and bronzes succeed in taking chalet chic to the next level whilst its cosy textiles and neutral colour scheme with pops of red make it the perfectly welcoming.

4. Hótel Borg, Reykjavik, Iceland

An unexpected home for a comprehensive Art Deco shrine, Reykjavik’s Hótel Borg nonetheless rivals even the most iconic Deco temples. Complete with sophisticated black and brown colouring, high-gloss woods, veneered parquet flooring and geometric lines, the recently opened venue is a loyal restoration to the original 1930s hotel but with  all the modern comforts courtesy of Philippe Starck fittings, Bang & Olufsen electricals and Hästens beds. Finding itself in the covetable heart of the city, The Borg makes for a prime base for all of your  Icelandic adventures.

5. Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto, Canada

For a yuletide with an Asian twist, this downtown Toronto hotspot of subtly Oriental-inspired proportions is the place to be. Transporting you to far more exotic climes complete with stellar hospitality but without having to relinquish absolutely all winter rites, it’s an appropriate choice for those who lean towards the Scrooge end of the festive spectrum.
