Q&A with Simone Moretti, The Arts Club Hotel Manager

The manager of the private members club’s new hotel divulges some of its best kept secrets

Jonathan Holmes
By Jonathan Holmes, Founder & CEO

Simone Moretti is certainly the man to talk to about The Arts Club. The Italian (who was Director of Special Services at Claridges previously) was chosen as the first manager of The Arts Club’s new hotel in what is sure to be a long line in a very bright future ahead.

Could you tell us about your favourite piece of art?

Fornasetti lamp in the Penthouse – his muse Lina Cavalieri’s story is so fascinating!

Which food spot would you recommend for a light lunch; a romantic dinner and a business meeting?

The River café always feels like a discovery; too many to name but my favourite restaurants are Scott’s or 34, they are step away from The Club and I always love the Art deco feeling and the outstanding quality of the food; The Ante Room, my favourite spot at The Arts Club.

What’s your favourite dish the Club serves?

I should say the entire menu but my favourites are fried courgettes together with the best steak tartare, and a burrata to die for!

What’s your favourite drink?

Negroni with bourbon, I always laugh at the reaction of the barman when I ask for this little change in the ingredients and I discovered here at the Club The Basil Sour, the freshest cocktail ever with egg white, basil, lemon juice and, of course, Belvedere vodka.

What’s the best way to spend a weekend night at the Club?

We are “all in one” and our guests do not really need to leave the Club as everything is “on hand”. I will definitely start my evening in our drawing room on the first floor. That room has a magic vibe with live music, lovely seating and, of course, a cocktail by the window [to] see the Mayfair world passing by! Dinner would definitely be Kyubi, our Japanese restaurant on the second floor – an authentic gem, so intimate and the team there is absolutely great. You really get the feeling of being part of a family when you get there and the food is second to none as well as the selection of sake. [The] food is truly a cultural thing!

Even if my clubbing days are over, I will not miss the visit to our night club 1863 for the last cocktail and to listen to some great artists playing. And, of course, breakfast in bed the following day!

What has been your favourite temporary exhibition so far?

My favourite temporary exhibition so far has been the one that involved different photographers such as Anne Collier, Elad Lassry, Roe Ethridge, Matt Lipps and Annette Kelm.

I fell in love for some of the images and they are definitely “on the radar” when I will be able to have a bigger living room!

When is your favourite time of day at the Club?

I love the early hours in the evening when you can truly feel the sense of place – the perfect retreat after a long day at work far from the madness of [the] London rhythm of life.

Which of the hotel’s beautiful rooms is your personal favourite?

I am emotionally attached to all the rooms but I love our Terrace Suite, [number] 17. Plenty of natural light, superb furniture and the skylight window in the bathroom is the cherry on the cake. It is occupied pretty often but when is not I don’t miss the chance to pop up and check that everything is perfect, as for the rest of the rooms.

What’s your top insider tip?

Push the bronze butler button in the room and the magic will happen. Anything, anytime!
